RB Leipzig have announced that they have appointed their new head coach, a former New York Red Bulls player and a very prolific scorer in the Bundesliga (80 goals in the German top division). Jesse Marsch, 43, will be the new boss of the Red Bull-owned team, which is in an ambitious project to build themselves a new stadium in the eastern German region of Leipzig.
The New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig have agreed to part ways after the Red Bulls promoted U.S. Soccer’s Jesse Marsch to the head coach position at RB Leipzig. While the RB Leipzig board expressed a desire for a more “European coach” to replace him, RB Leipzig have yet to announce who the next man in charge will be.

Coaching in a different language, in a different culture, with a new group of players and a new audience, I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous, Marsh recalls of his first season in Salzburg.
I was really hoping they would accept me to the end, but I wasn’t entirely sure. I think now, with the new language and more experience, I have also gained confidence in who I am and how I lead, and added that to who I am. Playing in the Champions League and achieving success at a very high level of football has definitely given me more confidence in my mindset, in my relationships with people and in who I am as a coach and leader.
Marsh excelled throughout the Red Bulls organization: He led the New York Red Bulls for four seasons, then moved to Leipzig as an assistant in 2018 before leading Salzburg for two seasons. The duties he has to perform in Leipzig are somewhat different from those he had in Austria. With Salzburg, his team was a permanent champion. With Leipzig, he will now try to oust Bayern, who have won the title nine times in a row, from the top of the Bundesliga.
In Europe there are levels, and that usually has to do with resources, and the difference in resources here is very different than there [in MLS], so the expectations are also very different, he said. So you need to manage all these elements - internal and external - correctly to give your team the best chance of working smoothly and achieving everything you have entrusted to them. So that’s a big part of the job - being here in Europe and trying to be a good manager for good clubs.

Marsh tried to downplay a bit the idea that he is the poster boy for American coaches who want to work abroad. He’s not even the only American to lead a Bundesliga team: The other is Pellegrino Matarazzo from Stuttgart. His approach is that success comes naturally if he makes the effort.
The best way to represent soccer in my home country, to be proud to be an American and to play an important role in the MLS, is to do what I think I have to do and try to work as hard as I can, he said. I appreciate people paying attention to me, and I appreciate people following what I do here. But on the other hand, I just try to come to work every day, do my job the best I can, represent the teams, players and clubs I work for, and the fans. If we do it effectively as a group, it usually reflects on the coach.
Marsh has developed a reputation for developing young players, including Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Bayern Munich’s new acquisition Dajota Upamekano. This includes player development beyond their performance on the field.
My main goal will be to get the best out of them, first and foremost as people, and encourage them to give each other everything they have, in the right way, he said. And then to be able to work with who they are as players, that’s luck. Even though we’ve only been training for two days, it’s exciting to see the opportunities that are presenting themselves and I can already see how I can help improve some of these players.
One player who could work under Marsh is Caden Clark, who is currently on loan to the New York Red Bulls after coming to Leipzig earlier this year.
You can tell he has energy, skill and believes in himself, Marsh said of Clark. It borders on arrogance, but it’s also rooted in confidence in who he is and what he stands for. This is always the best starting point for me.
