An earthquake is a natural disaster that causes human and material losses, not to mention damage to infrastructure. A magnitude 7.3 earthquake has occurred on the coast of Fukushima prefecture in Japan. Tokyo, the capital of Japan, felt the tremors. One of the world’s worst nuclear disasters occurred at Fukushima in 2011. It caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, destroyed a nuclear facility and spread radiation. This has played into the hands of the environment, which is slowly recovering from its effects. The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that there were 14 aftershocks, but no tsunami warnings were issued.

In an earthquake, buildings collapse, bridges crumble, power lines break and roads are blocked by debris. Communication breakdowns occur and travel becomes difficult. Seismometers can predict a possible earthquake, but not its exact location. As a result, there is always an element of surprise and people get caught off guard. A recent earthquake measuring 6.2 struck the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, killing at least 34 people.

NBC News quotes Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga: There were no anomalies in any of the nuclear power plants. That’s all right. He said it at a press conference. He urged people to stay indoors and prepare for aftershocks. Efforts are being made to determine the extent of the damage and the number of people affected.

Earthquake Alarm Required.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has warned people to watch out for earthquakes. There is an increased risk of structural collapse and landslides in areas where the quakes have been most intense. NBC News reports on the Fukushima disaster in 2011. At that time, there was an earthquake in the region with a magnitude of 9.0.

He was the strongest in Japan’s history. A tsunami followed, leaving a trail of death in its wake. The whereabouts of many of the missing are still unknown. The tsunami destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. A safe shutdown will be a long process and could take decades.

Earthquake at the site of the 2020 Olympic Games

Fukushima, by the way, was supposed to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, which have been postponed because of the coronavirus. Earthquakes are unpredictable and disrupt people’s lives. Many of them lose their homes, end up on the street and have to start their lives all over again. They see their homes crumbling before their eyes. The environment is being crushed and animals and wildlife are losing their habitat. NBC News adds that Japan is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, and earthquakes are not new. The country is responsible for about 20% of the world’s major earthquakes. In November 2020, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed at least 27 people in Turkey and Greece.

At least 48 people injured in the earthquake

State television station NHK reported at least 48 people injured in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, but no major deaths. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter struck a town 60 miles from Fukushima. This earthquake occurred in the same area as the one on the 11th. March 2011. The earthquake caused major damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. This led to the evacuation of over 100,000 people from the region and countless deaths. This natural disaster caused landslides and uprooted sections of a major highway, delaying traffic. The dikes along the road have collapsed. There have also been power outages in many areas, including Tokyo. In December 2018, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska and damaged infrastructure.
