With the moon and Mars all but considered a thing of the past (for now, at least), it’s an exciting time to be a space explorer. The goal is clear: figure out how to get humans back to the moon and eventually Mars. And now, NASA will begin charting the way to a mission to return to Venus, too.
On 7/11/12 we will return to the surface of Venus as part of the Venus Express mission. The first Venus missions were launched in 1978, and the last was in 2005. Since then, we’ve had to wait 19 years for another chance to explore Venus.
In 2020, the United States will once again attempt the first human mission to the planet Venus. The goal will be to send a crew of 4 people to live in an orbiting space station, for 2 years. The mission will be a test of humanity’s ability to live in space for long periods of time. This will be the first time in 8 years that a human has been to the planet Venus.

NASA announced Wednesday that the Lockheed Martin Corp. build and operate two new space probes to study the geology of the planet and its greenhouse atmosphere. Scientists believe that the oceans of Venus have disappeared, that the climate has deteriorated like on Earth, and that the surface temperature has become high enough to melt lead. While other countries, including Japan and India, and even private operators are considering launching missions to the planet, NASA prefers to launch two missions this decade to study the planet’s geology and the possibility of life in its thick clouds. Lockheed Martin plans to launch spacecraft by the end of this decade and operate them under NASA’s evolving public-private partnership model, similar to its plans to send astronauts to the moon later this decade. The company’s predecessor built the spacecraft used in the Magellan mission to map Venus in 1989.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced missions to Venus on Wednesday in Washington.

It celebrated the successful launch of American astronauts on domestic rockets for the first time in more than a decade and the landing of the Perseverance rover on Mars. We are embarking on a new decade on Venus to see how an Earth-like planet can become a greenhouse, he said. Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA Deputy Administrator for Science. For years, Venus remained on the sidelines of space research, until interest was rekindled last fall after the discovery of a phosphine gas molecule in its atmosphere that some scientists believe could have been produced by microbes. NASA continues to fund a number of studies related to Venus, including experiments to develop instruments that could operate on the planet’s glowing surface. She also supported an open competition to design a rover for Venus for a future mission. Volcanic eruptions are often difficult to predict and can cause significant social and economic damage. Scientists are now turning to NASA satellites to help them predict eruptions months or even years in advance and minimize their impact on human activity.
