As a sophomore, he was named the consensus national collegiate player of the year while playing basketball for the Oklahoma Sooners. Careers in the NBA: Los Angeles Clippers (2009–2018)
Griffin announced on April 7, 2009 that he will skip his final two years of eligibility and join the NBA draft after his second season. ESPNews announced his decision in a nationwide news conference. The Los Angeles Clippers selected him first overall in the 2009 NBA draft. While playing for the Clippers’ Summer League squad, Griffin was named Summer League MVP. In their last preseason game, he injured his kneecap falling after a dunk. Griffin’s NBA debut was postponed by seven weeks after he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left knee the day before the 2009–10 season started. Examinations indicated that his knee was not mending adequately after many weeks of resting the stress fracture. Griffin underwent surgery in January 2010 to repair his broken left kneecap, which caused him to miss the balance of the 2009–10 season.
Rookie of the Year in 2010–2011
Because he missed the whole 2009–10 season, Griffin was still designated a rookie for the 2010–11 season. Griffin made his NBA debut against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Griffin, along with new teammate Chris Paul, was picked to participate in the 2012 NBA All-Star Game as a starter for the first time.
