So, the first time I watched the Jacksonville Jaguars play, I had no idea they had a rookie WR. Neither did the Twitter world. But, as we get closer and closer to the NFL Season, more and more people are starting to pay attention to the Jaguars. One person who has noticed is Urban Meyer.
After missing most of his rookie season with a hamstring injury, wide receiver DJ Chark is healthy and ready to make an impact with the Jaguars. Coach Meyer challenged Chark to be “big and strong” this offseason, and he appears to be responding as the Jaguars evaluate his ability to contribute.
With all the excitement over the NFL Draft, one major story has been largely overlooked: the Jaguars traded their first-round pick to the Bucs to move up and take WR DJ Chark in the second round. Coach Meyer and the rest of the Jaguars seem incredibly excited for the future of their receiving corps. I like a challenge, Chark said. I’d like to talk to Coach Meyer. He’s a competitor. He’s going to push me. … But I like it, man. It will push me to be better than I am. Chark caught 73 passes for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to exceed the 1,000-yard receiving mark, despite problems with quarterbacks Blake Bortles and Cody Kessler. Last year, however, Chark missed three games due to injury and struggled with a sore shoulder and back for the first part of the season. He caught 53 passes for 706 yards and five touchdowns and was visibly frustrated by the inconsistent play of quarterbacks Gardner Minshew, Jake Luton and Mike Glennon. I mean, we were 1-15. I don’t think anyone played as well as we wanted to, Chark said. Yeah, it wasn’t my best work. There have been times when I have taken things a little lightly. …. You know, watch my performance. I feel like if I want to be who I want to be, I have to be that all the time. Meyer said he was glad Chark faced the harsh criticism. It shows he’s a smart player, Meyer said. This world is made to increase one’s value, and D.J. Chark can increase his value by getting bigger and stronger and playing that way. And he can help us win too. I mean, I love that there was no resistance. He confirmed it, and [receivers coach] Sanjay [Lal] worked with him. I like it where it is. Chark should benefit from the arrival of new quarterback Trevor Lawrence and veteran receiver Marvin Jones Jr. Jones will draw attention and will keep opposing defenders from focusing on stopping Charc, who said he struggled at times late in 2019 after establishing himself as the team’s best receiver. Chark says his goal is to always be better than he was in 2020. I definitely think I can be much better than last year, he said. This will definitely be an important step for me in my future career. I’m not going back.As we look forward to the upcoming NFL season, the first big story to watch is the status of veteran wide receiver DJ Chark . After getting off to a promising start in 2017, Chark fell out of favor with coach Doug Marrone in the second half, and was inactive for the Jaguars’ playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
