On the day President Donald Trump faces a second indictment for his role in inciting riots on Capitol Hill, New York officials announced their intention to terminate Trump’s contracts to operate Trump Golf Links in Ferry Park, Central Park Carousel, and the Wollman and Lasker Rinks effective immediately.
The attack on our Capitol killed a police officer, caused four rioters, endangered lawmakers for Covid-19 and threatened the constitutional transfer of power, according to a statement released Wednesday morning. They were a national atrocity. We are currently investigating whether, in light of these new circumstances, there is a legal basis for terminating the concessions with the Trump Organization.
International real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield (CWK) said Wednesday it had decided to stop doing business with the Trump organization, a spokesman said.
Over the years, Cushman has managed several office and retail properties for the Trump organization, including the Trump Tower in New York City, Trump Plaza, the Trump Building at 40 Wall Street, and the Trump International Hotel and Trump International Tower in Chicago.
Trump and New York Mayor de Blasio have been at each other’s throats for a long time. Although the Trump organization’s website still lists New York as its headquarters, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump moved their legal residence from the city to Florida in October 2019. Mr Trump said at the time that he decided to move because he had been treated very badly by the city and state’s political leaders.
De Blasio said the city is on firm ground to cancel contracts because of the president’s behavior last week.
Inciting rebellion against the U.S. government is clearly a criminal activity, de Blasio told MSNBC on Wednesday. New York City will have nothing more to do with the Trump organization.
The Trump organization has vowed to fight the city’s actions.
This is yet another example of Mayor Blasio’s incompetence and blatant disregard for the facts, the company said in a statement. New York City has no legal right to terminate our contracts, and if it chooses to do so, it owes the Trump organization more than $30 million. This is nothing but political discrimination, and we intend to fight it vigorously.
Contracts for the four facilities earned $17.9 million in 2019, according to the latest federal financial disclosure report. The most lucrative contract was the skating rink contract, which brought in a total of $9.4 million.
The contracts give the city the right to terminate the contract at will and also provide that the decision to terminate the contract is solely and exclusively at the discretion of the city. It seems that Mr de Blasio has enough legal means to sound the alarm. However, the contracts also provide that the reason for termination should not be arbitrary or capricious.

The Wollman Rink is Trump’s oldest contract with the city and is the cornerstone of Trump’s reputation as a successful businessman. After several failed attempts by the city to rebuild and open the track in the 1980s, Trump was hired to renovate and operate the facility in 1986.
His company’s website indicates that the $2 million renovation was completed in four months, which he says was under budget and ahead of schedule.
He was only 40 at the time and is still making a name for himself. The Living Rink opened its doors a year before the publication of his book The Art of the Deal. It also preceded a series of bankruptcies that began in 1991 and tarnished his reputation, and long before his casting on the reality TV show The Apprentice made him an even bigger celebrity.
