Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts talks with offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton before the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week Four. October 2015.
There are now at least three candidates for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new offensive coordinator.
The Steelers have requested an interview with Los Angeles Chargers quarterback coach Pep Hamilton, according to Josina Anderson, host of the digital show and host of the podcast Uncertain with Josina Anderson.
So it may have been premature to call Steelers coach Matt Canada, the likely successor to Randy Fichtner, as was reported nearly a week ago. The Steelers also interviewed former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson for the role they’ve played since, and other candidates may emerge.
Meanwhile, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is trying to find a new offensive line coach to replace Sean Sarrett with Hank Fraley, who will be available for an interview on Thursday. They also need to find a new coach to replace James Daniels, who resigned last week.
Pep Hamilton: Quarterback whisperer?
But Pep Hamilton is a particularly interesting candidate for the offensive coordinator position, so at least one other NFL team is interested in him.
According to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN, he is a candidate for the position of offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, as is the previously mentioned Canada.

Hamilton is a hot commodity right now as coach of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who has already been named Rookie of the Offensive Rookie of the Year by Pro Football Writers of America 2020, not to mention Pro Football Talk’s Rookie of the Year.
In 15 games, Herbert had 66.6% of his passes for 4,336 yards with 31 touchdowns against just 10 steals. His rookie records include total touchdowns (36), touchdown passes (31), completed passes (396) and 300-yard passes (eight). He fell 39 yards behind rookie Andrew Luck’s record of 4,374 yards. It was another QB that Hamilton had both at Stanford University and with the Indianapolis Colts.
Coach trip to Hamilton
Hamilton’s coaching career began in 1997 at Howard University before he joined the New York Jets in 2003. He has also worked for the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns. Most recently, he worked with Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan, where he was Passing Game Coordinator (PGC) and Assistant Head Coach (2017) and PGC Coach and Quarterback (2018). He was head coach/general manager of the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020 before accepting the position with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Hamilton made his NFL debut as a summer intern for the Kansas City Chiefs (2000) and then for the Washington football team (2001). Some of the other quarterbacks he has coached are: Chad Pennington (New York Jets), Alex Smith (San Francisco 49ers) and Jay Cutler (Chicago Bears).
Detroit Lions Interview with Coach Steel Mill
Meanwhile, it appears Steelers coach Ike Hilliard is running for the position of offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
It would be a big loss for the Steelers. Only the Pittsburgh season, but crucial to the development of Chase Claypool and other Steelers WR. Also responsible for developing Terry McLaurin at WFT. https://t.co/U3A0Iyx8u3.

Hilliard, a former New York Giants first-round coach (No. 7 in 1997), has a decade of experience coaching NFL wide receivers, primarily in Washington, D.C., but also in Buffalo and Miami.
