Molina, a longtime catcher and currently a free agent for the Cardinals of St. Louis, is arrested by Puerto Rican agent Criollos de Caguas. This is the second Caribbean series for the 38-year-old, who joins the Caguas squad for the postseason, and the first since 2007, when he was part of the Carolina Gigantes squad.
Mazatlan will also feature Cano, who is suspended for the 2021 MLB season after being retested for performance-enhancing drugs. Cano, also 38, will play for the Aguilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Republic, who will be joined by Carlos Martinez, right-handed All-Star Cardinals and longtime assistant to Molina.
The Dominicans have won 20 titles in the series, more than any other country, and finished second behind Toros del Este last year. The first phase of the series is a six-team round robin, followed by a double semifinal on February 5 and the championship match on February 6.
