Last night the CW aired an all-new episode of Supergirl, in which Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) managed to both save a group of drunken high school students and execute a daring (albeit faulty) plan to stop an alien invasion. Here’s what you missed, in case you missed it:

For most of its run, Supergirl has thrived by balancing life and saving the world. In the fourth season, the series has started to prioritize the latter over the former, throwing Kara into battle after battle with little time to deal with the fallout. The latest episode, “Prom Night,” was a perfect example of this, as the DEO went up against the Children of Liberty in an explosive battle at the Snow Valley High prom. After a slow start, the episode quickly turned into a nonstop action sequence, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the audience guessing until the final shot.

Last week in Supergirl, the Superfriends gave up their only chance to find Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) in the Phantom Zone to stop the Phantom threatening National City. But thanks to the dream of Nia/Dreamer (Nicole Maines), they get a second chance - even if it means returning to Midvale in 2009 to get Kara’s DNA. This week, Nia and Braney (Jesse Rath) travel back in time to collect DNA, but time travel always comes with risks and challenges, and while the mission is clear, it may not be as easy as they hoped.

Want to know the details and storylines of this week’s episode, Prom night! of Supergirl? We’re here to help you. Here are the highlights of the graduation party! Warning: Full spoilers for the episode after this point. Only read on if you want to know.

Get ready for Blast Past

The episode opens with Braney and Nia discovering the exact location of Kara’s DNA in 2009, the DNA they need to rescue Kara from the Phantom Zone. The newspaper clipping also states that Midvale is the happiest town, and it turns out that Kara’s boyfriend Kenny was never killed in this timeline, and J’onn offers to have him return due to an unexpected disagreement with Nia and Brainy, but Brainy refuses, saying it’s too risky. Nia realizes that going back to 2009 will take her to a time when her mother was alive, while Braney is a little nervous about the accuracy of time travel.

Midvale, 2009

In 2009, Alex and Kara get back together, and Kara puts off telling Kenny that she plans to go to National City University instead of the school she wanted to go to with Kenny. She learns that Braney has had an accident at the stadium, and Alex leads them there. On their way out, they run into Kat Grant, who is there to do a story on Midvale.

Nia and Braney arrived in Midvale a day early and were found by Kara, Kenny and Alex. They soon claim to be paranormal aliens from the planet Psycon, and manage to disguise themselves poorly. They had to avoid any contact with Alex and Kara. Kara wants to help the aliens, but Alex thinks that’s a problem. Kara finally introduces herself to Brainy (who goes by Brandon) and Nia (who goes by Brenda) and offers her help. As the authorities approach, Kara begins to hide the ship, but Nia and Braney quickly take matters into their own hands and hide it under the baseball field. Kenny takes Braney home, Nia goes home with the Danvers girls.

Drawing up the plan

At Kenny, Brainy is a little worried when he realizes he doesn’t have access to a 3D printer, but Kenny has a solid solution that will require them to go to school. At Kara’s home, Nia and Kara grow closer, but Nia has a hard time dealing with the fact that she misses her mother, who she knows is still alive in 2009. Later, Nia has a dream in which she sees a purple wildcat in a cage that escapes and is somehow connected to Midvale High.

At school, Kenny and Braney talk while working on the 3D printer. Kenny says he has built a base for himself and Kara. Kenny goes to class and asks Braney not to leave the lab, but printing takes a long time and he runs out of snacks, so he goes to the snack machine, where he is discovered by the choir teacher and brought to class. Later Kenny finds him at the stadium, as Braney has been recruited by just about everyone.

Reports and foreigners

Kat wanders around Midvale, convinced that some super being is behind everything that happens in Midvale, and sets out to find her story. She meets Alex with her mother’s ID for questioning and introduces herself as C.J. Grant. Alex tells him that there’s nothing to do in Midvale. Nia and Kara find the mineral they need. On their way home, the girls are almost hit by a driverless gasoline truck.

At the beginning of the episode, we learn that a bunch of aliens have decided to travel to Earth to capture a Kryptonian - namely Kara. It turns out there are aliens behind the getaway car, trying to lure the Kryptonian. Kara and Nia get in the truck and stop it, causing the aliens to miss a shot. The aliens realize that a Naltorian and a Colombian are with them, but they fly away without taking anyone with them. Kat isn’t far away though and sees that something strange has happened, although she hasn’t caught them in the act.
