After selecting Zach Wilson in our 2021 NFL Draft, the Jets need to give the young star some weapons. After acquiring this pick from the Seattle Seahawks in the Jamal Adams trade, the Jets must take a receiver. However, the top three receivers in the draft (Jaylen Waddle, Ja’Marr Chase, Devonta Smith) should be taken off the shelf at pick #23.

However, the team thinks the Jets are targeting Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman to give Wilson another playmaker to start his career.

Bateman is the perfect target for any quarterback. He has a good physique, is 1.90 m tall and weighs 90 kg with plenty of room left. One of his many strengths is his ability to escape defenders. Throughout the 2019 college season, Bateman has had unbeatable split scores on most courts.

Bateman’s success in the opener was due to his release. He has a unique set of release moves that allow him to thrive at the line of scrimmage. The key to a good receiver is being open, and Bateman has the tools to be open more often than not.

His grades also showed that he could open up. Bateman’s stats suffered in 2020, when he appeared in just five games. However, Bateman has caught 60 catches for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2019. His average of 20.3 yards per catch defines his ability to get on the field and cause havoc. Bateman has caught 147 passes for 2,395 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career. If Minnesota were to play a full schedule in 2020, it’s safe to assume Bateman’s numbers would match those of 2019.

One of the best aspects of Rashod Bateman’s skills is his routing. He has a versatile shaft and can vary the speed of his trajectories well.

Multiple outputs. Last year I analyzed all his runs in a three-part series:

The praise he received for his performance propelled him to the first round of the draft. Bateman is a receiver worth getting excited about, and to say that Zach Wilson won’t be excited about his new weapon on the outside is probably wrong. If Bateman is so good with his hands, route-running and movement, why isn’t he considered the best of the 15 picks?

The biggest concern for Bateman at the next level is probably his success in a media environment. Not only does his release become slow or ineffective against pressing corners, but he also struggles to be consistent against high-level corners. The key for Bateman could be to build muscle by taking more physical angles at the highest level.

Also, Bateman’s hip weakness can cause problems on difficult NFL routes. Not all college receivers run a full route, but against lesser opponents Bateman has been able to run routes. If he doesn’t work on his flexibility at the next level, it could limit his routing and therefore his playing time. For Bateman to become a dangerous weapon for the Jets, he needs to get stronger and work on his hip flexibility.

It’s an easy request for Bateman. The video shows all the talent he has and how special he is as a receiver. Although the Jets know the situation Bateman is in, he could be an immediate boost at the NFL level and for his starting quarterback if he goes to New York.

Final thoughts

Bateman is a very talented receiver. He has some slight reservations, like all other prospects, but he has the tape to back up his drafting. Bateman has the ability to break free early, strong catch and run skills and good route running, making him a dangerous receiver. He has the most trouble with the press, but with a little work and the right coaching, Bateman could be the kind of target that the starting quarterback needs and that the New York Jets desperately need.
