Last week, we reported that Disney+ has ordered a live-action movie focused on the life of Billie Eilish. Now, the streaming service has released the first official trailer for the film, which sees the 17-year-old singer-songwriter performing alongside a cast of big-name stars.
Disney+’s new videos will be documentaries. The first one released by the platform, Happier Than Ever, features Billie Eilish, who just happens to be one of the coolest young artists on the planet today.
Fans of Billie Eilish may see the debut of her concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles on Disney+ on September 3rd. The musical performance, directed by Robert Rodriguez and Patrick Osborne and shot in the Hollywood Bowl, catches Eilish alongside Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and features the Grammy winner performing her songs in sequence for the first time. Today, Disney+ released the event’s teaser, which announced the release date as well as gave fans a taste of what to anticipate from the film.
Billie Eilish’s second studio album, Happier Than Ever, will be released on July 30, after her Album of the Year debut When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, as well as Eilish’s producer brother Finneas and orchestra arrangements by David Campbell, will be included in the video, which will showcase the performance interlaced with animations that will look at Eilish’s hometown.
“To work on anything like this with Disney is an incredible honor,” Eilish remarked of the endeavor. “It thrills me to be able to offer my album in this manner and dedicate it to the city I love and grew up in. I really hope you like it.”
Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Branded Television, added: “Billie’s musical development, along with her unique vision in creating this special, distinguishes her as one of the most talented musicians and storytellers of her age. She puts up a show that is unlike any other!”
Eilish recently made news when a video surfaced from when she was about 13 years old in which she is seen mouthing a phrase from Tyler, the Creator’s song “Fish” that is an anti-Asian slur. In response to the video’s emergence, the singer took to social media to explain that she was just mouthing the lyrics to a song at the time and had no idea they were disparaging.
“”Many of you have asked me to address this, and this is something that I WANT to address since I’m being branded as something I’m not,” Eilish wrote. I mouthed a phrase from a song that I had no idea was a pejorative slur used towards Asian people at the time. I’m mortified and ashamed, and I want to puke, that I ever uttered that phrase. Whatever my age or naivety at the time, nothing justifies the fact that it was cruel, and I apologize.”
It was also alleged that Eilish was mimicking an accent that was not her own in the same compilation video. This was soon debunked by her, who said, “The other video in that edited tape is of me speaking in a goofy gibberish made-up voice, which I’ve done since I was a child while chatting to my pets, friends, and family. It’s complete nonsense and simply me messing about, and it’s not even close to being an imitation of anybody or any language, accent, or culture.”
“Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve spent my whole life making up voices. I did not intend for any of my acts to cause harm to anyone, regardless of how they were perceived, and it hurts my heart that it is now being branded in a manner that may cause grief to those who hear it. I have always worked hard to utilize my position to fight for inclusiveness, compassion, tolerance, equity, and equality, which I not only believe in, but have always fought hard to achieve. We must all continue to have discussions, listen, and learn. I’m listening to you, and I adore you. Please accept my sincere gratitude for taking the time to read this.”
Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles, starring Billie Eilish, will debut on Disney+ on September 3.
