A classic Star Wars character prepares to return to a galaxy far, far away. Dash Rendar, who fans will recognize from Shadows of the Empire, is the subject of an article in Star Wars Insider: One volume in a fiction collection. 1. This compilation contains the stories of several characters, but this one is worth mentioning because it pays homage to one of the greatest stories that is no longer part of the franchise’s official canon.

An excerpt from Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnoff’s story, And Leebo Makes Three, recently surfaced online. Dash Rendar was quickly chosen as the centerpiece of the story. We could also see the drawing of a character that should be familiar to anyone who played the video game Shadows of the Empire on the Nintendo 64. The first paragraph of the article reads as follows

APPROPRIATE: Did Porgs exist in China during the Jurassic period? The new pterosaur was compared to Star Wars

Rodian looked around Nexu s lair as if searching for someone he desperately hoped not to see. Dash Rander sat across from him at a dimly lit corner table in a shabby, dingy bar and involuntarily wondered why he was still trying to see – the air was a black mass of smoke from the death stick and other inhalants, all designed to make the present more interesting and the future unattainable. His lungs protested despite his shallow breathing.

For those who don’t know him: Shadows of the Empire is a massive multimedia initiative by Lucasfilm at a time when there wasn’t much happening with Star Wars. It included novels, video games, comics and toys, and told the original story between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Dash Render, the captain of a ship called the Outrider, was central to the story. While some thought it was a Han Solo heist, the character himself has become very popular. That’s why his appearance in this new story is important. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to further performances.

Shadows of the Empire and many other stories were dropped from the canon when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. With the exception of the Clone Wars cartoon series, everything else is called Legends. Although many characters and storylines have since been reused in the official canon. Grand Admiral Thrawn, for example, was introduced as a villain in Star Wars Rebels season 3 and is now set to take a more prominent place in the universe. So, in theory, Dash Render could make a similar leap.

Star Wars Insider: The Fantastic Collection Volume 1 features stories with iconic characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian and Darth Vader, as well as Darth Pleasure, Cad Bane and Temmin ‘Snap’ Wexley. These stories are written by well-known Star Wars authors such as Jason Frye, Matthew Stover, Timothy Zahn, John Ostrander, and Christy Golden. The collection also features original works by artists who have worked with the franchise over the years, including Joe Corroney, Brian Rood, Ian Duursema and John Van Fleet. Star Wars Insider: A Collection of Fiction, Volume 1, will be released on the 4th. May appear. You can see the full clip on io9.
