Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski identified one starter from each NFL club who “must be replaced in 2022.”
He chose Ryan Griffin, a seasoned starting tight end for the Jets:
“The tight end position isn’t producing anything for the Jets. Ryan Griffin has 25 catches and 222 yards, which puts him in seventh place on the team. This season, 32 other tight ends have accumulated more receiving yards.”
Sobleski then clarified that the 31-year-contract old’s had one year remaining on it, but that he “shouldn’t be playing nearly as many repetitions as he has this season.”
Griffin’s deal has one more year left on it, with a cap cost of $3.2 million, until 2022. The Jets would save the full of that money with zero dead cap if they just ripped off the band-aid and released him outright.

There was a lot of intrigue and interest over the summer about what the Jets offense would look like under first-time NFL play-caller Mike LaFleur’s leadership.
Without any previous experience, it was hard to predict who would be the offense’s major targets, but many of us guessed that the tight end position would be crucial to the unit’s success.
Despite this, the Jets have declined to make any substantial expenditures at the TE position during the 2021 NFL draft or in free agency.
That was certainly a blunder, and they’ll get a chance to make amends in the offseason of 2022.
The top-75 NFL free agents slated to reach the open market next March were rated and broken down by Pro Football Focus.
The following tight ends made the cut (in order of their ranking):
- Miami Dolphins’ Mike Gesicki
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Rob Gronkowski
- Dallas Cowboys’ Dalton Schultz
- Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku
- Arizona Cardinals’ Zach Ertz
- Seattle Seahawks’ Gerald Everett
- New York Giants’ Evan Engram
That isn’t going to happen, as awesome as Gronk would be. The other six tight ends on the list, on the other hand, may make sense for a number of reasons.
As a receiving weapon, Gesicki seems to be a logical match, almost like a larger slot. Njoku/Engram are made of the same material as athletic clay pieces that haven’t been able to fit the parts together.
Regardless of whatever option you favor (let us know in the comments below), the Jets need to get serious about improving the skill around their rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.
