I recently had a chance to sit down with Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, and he told me what it’s like to have a big franchise on the air, and how he sees his new space opera series Sense8 fitting in with the current landscape.
A new report states that Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski has been in contact with Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat about a potential role on the new Doctor Who series. If this happens, it will be Straczynski’s first time working on the same show that he created, which would mark a reunion for the two Star Trek writers. After leaving Babylon 5, Straczynski worked on a number of other television series and movies, including the Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League animated series, and is currently working on the ABC series The River.

An American science fiction writer is attempting to become the first non-British showrunner for Doctor Who. J. Michael Straczynski is best known for co-creating Sense8 and writing Superman, Spider-Man, Thor, and the Fantastic Four comic books. He’d want to come up with ideas for the Doctor’s future adventures for his next job. Doctor Who will enter a new era following the series of specials in 2022, with Chris Chibnall on board and Jodie Whittaker on her way out. According to Straczynski’s Twitter account, his agency contacted the to express his interest in the showrunner job. According to Straczynski, a lengthy procedure must first take place, but after that, who knows?
Straczynski tweeted, “Contact with the has been established.” “They’re going through their own procedure, which started before my tweet and must be completed, but if those don’t work out and there’s a conversation to be had, they’ll contact me. We’ll see where their procedure takes us since they’re quite polite.”

Chibnall, who worked on Doctor Who as a writer during Russell T. Davies’ tenure as showrunner, returned to the program in 2017 when Whittaker became the first female Doctor. Chibnall said three seasons were always the goal in a statement published to announce his departure.
“At the outset of our once-in-a-lifetime explosion, Jodie and I struck a ‘three series and out’ agreement with each other,” he added. “Now that our shift is over, we’re returning the TARDIS keys.” All of our high hopes for Jodie’s wonderful, legendary Doctor have been surpassed. She’s been the gold standard leading lady, carrying the burden of being the first female Doctor with grace, strength, kindness, charity, and humor. She captivated the public’s imagination and continues to inspire love from everyone involved in the production all around the globe. I can’t fathom working with a more motivating physician, therefore I won’t!
“Leading this incredible group has been unrivaled creative pleasure for me, and one of the highlights of my career. I’m very pleased of the individuals with whom we’ve collaborated and the tales we’ve shared. It’s a nice treat to end our time on the program with an extra Special after the epidemic disrupted and strained our production plans. It’s fantastic that the Thirteenth Doctor’s narrative climax will be at the center of the’s centennial festivities. I hope our successors – whomever the and Studios select – the same amount of enjoyment we’ve enjoyed. They’re going to have a great time!”
