FRISCO, Texas — Imagine the excitement when you know you can start your NFL career on Sunday. Imagine what it would be like for the Dallas Cowboys (2-6). Imagine this happening against a single, invincible NFL team at the Pittsburgh Steel Plant (7-0).
Imagine now that two days before the race you don’t know if you are going to win the position or if the person you see every day at the training is going to get it.
That’s the life of Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush, who claim to be the fourth other starting quarterback of the Cowboys in 2020.
However, both quarterbacks stated that they did not consider training to be some kind of duel.

I think he finally gets it. He’s been in this league long enough to win a soccer game, Gilbert said. Yeah, we’re competing for the first job, but we’re competing to win a soccer game for this team. We would be doing each other a disservice by doing that and comparing ourselves, and I think we would be doing the team a disservice because I think it would affect our training. … The only thing we can do… …is keep getting ready, like we play on Sundays.
According to Gilbert, the division of tasks was left to the discretion of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterback coach Doug Nussmeyer. Rush described it as an accident, so quarterbacks can go through different situations.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said the goal is to have a starter against Saturday’s practice.
It will not be a statistical solution. It’s really based on rhythm, continuity and control, McCarthy said. We have to make sure we implement our plan to play defense against the Steelmakers. … Clearly, Garrett has a little more experience than Cooper, because he was here. We’re working on it now. My goal is to make sure both boys are ready for Sunday.
Last week, when Andy Dalton came out with a concussion, the Cowboys started with rookie Ben DiNucci, who made 21 out of 40 assists of 180 yards in a 23-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was fired four times and lost twice.
Dalton, who replaced Duck Prescott, was placed on the reserve list/COVID-19 on Tuesday and opened the match between Gilbert and Rush after the DiNucci match.

While DiNucci has more NFL playing experience than Gilbert or Rush, McCarthy believes that the more time Gilbert and Rush have spent with NFL teams in terms of training and pre-season play, the more useful the Cowboys will be for their immediate needs.
In 2018 and 2019, Gilbert made two 60-yard passes with the Caroline Panthers and Cleveland Brownes respectively. In 2014 he entered the competition in the sixth round of St. Louis. Louis Ramse. He last played with Orlando Apollos in 2019 in the American Football Alliance.
Gilbert, 29, said he is considering joining the management staff at SMU, where he ended his academic career before joining the Panthers in 2018.
Gilbert said it was quite a journey. It’s a fine line if I can say it’s over and I don’t know if I’ll get another chance. I never lost that faith, and I never lost the love for him and the desire to be here, the desire to play.
Rush’s last start was the Cowboys’ 2018 pre-season final against the Texas Houstonians. Although he was cut off by the cowboys in May after signing Dalton, he said most of Dallas’ crimes will remain known from 2017 to 2019.
Rush said it’s a blast if you go back inside, throw yourself against a live defense, fly with guys in your pocket and everything. After all, you prepare for the same goal, you help each other. It’s your responsibility as a Buy More. We’re all on the same team. Just trying to prepare for the game helps everyone, helps the whole team.

Daniel Dopp asks Mike Clay and Field Yates where all of Ezekiel Elliot’s tricks have gone?
Rush, 26, knows not only the cowboy system, but also the staff that throws the passes to Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Ezekiel Elliot, Tony Pollard and Dalton Schultz.
It’s one thing that made me very happy when I threw the routes in the air and everything, and the weather, the last few days have really come back much quicker than I had hoped, Rush said. Throw these guys years before you really help them. He’ll be right back.
Rush’s career includes three attempts at passage, all in the 2017 season after spending three seasons as Prescott’s safety net.
If Rush McCarthy had voted, he would have been the first non-beginning cowboy quarterback to make his debut with less than six paces in his entire career. If Gilbert had been at the beginning, he would have met Reggie Collier (1986) and Drew Henson (2004) as soon as possible (six times) among the new quarterbacks who made their first attempts. Former quarterback Anthony Wright made eight attempts before performing with the Cowboys for the first time in 2000.
While Gilbert and Rush wait to see who will win the race, the goal of the rest of the attack is to make everyone feel comfortable on Sunday.
Every time several guys play in this position it’s hard, said Cowboys Pro Bowl defender Zack Martin. But what we can do is make sure that those who are there feel as comfortable as possible, to try to make the world a better place. So we focus on preparing whoever’s gonna be there, and we’re gonna make it happen.
