Following the loss of a libel case in the UK last month, Johnny Depp went directly to the Court of Appeal asking for the court’s controversial decision to be overturned. The complaint stems from an article in the British tabloid The Sun in which Depp was described as his wife’s criminal after his ex-wife Amber Heart claimed that the actor had subjected her to physical abuse during their marriage. Depp then sued the Sun Publisher News Group, claiming it was Hipp who really insulted him.
During the trial, Hayard took the stand and confirmed his claims that Depp was aggressive during their relationship. Depp’s legal team then released audio recordings in which Depp allegedly admitted to physically attacking him, which would confirm his side of the story for many fans. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court rejected Depp’s trial in November and finally decided that what the Sun had reported was indeed true.
The worst thing for Depp is that it cost him his lucrative job to play against Grindelwald in Fantastic Monsters 3. A few days after the verdict, Warner Bros. Depp to resign and in a statement to Instagram, Depp stated that he was obliged to comply with his request. He also stated that he had sworn to appeal the decision.
A surreal judicial decision in Great Britain will not change my fight for the truth, and I confirm that I intend to appeal, Depp wrote. My determination remains great and I intend to prove that the accusations against me are false. My life and career are not determined by that moment.
Depp’s appeal plans first reached an impasse when the same judge who had ruled against him dismissed his appeal on the grounds that he did not think he had a reasonable chance of success. Pirates of the Caribbean Star took the next step and applied to the UK Court of Appeal for the list of outstanding appeals. It is not yet known when a decision will be taken on his application for leave to appeal.
Meanwhile, Depp’s legal problems with the herd continue in a separate U.S. court case. He also brings a libel action against Amber Herd based on her 2018 article for the Washington Post, in which he claims to be a victim of domestic violence. Depp later claimed that Disney had removed him from his position as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as a result of the dispute. Depp wants to get $50 million from his ex-wife in a lawsuit.
Public opinion seems to be largely on Depp’s side. The Aquamen-2 rejection request has received more than 1.5 million signatures and is growing day by day. Other petitions have been submitted to encourage Depp to resume his actorial role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Fantastic Beasts 3. Luckily for the actor, he managed to keep his work as Sauvage Face for Dior, so that not everything was lost.
